1) I’m gonna miss the *hell* out of Ryan.
That said, I’m really glad we’re all moving forward with Harmaline. I’ve been going back over the last 2 (!!) years of our material, communications, and plans (failed or successful) and it’s been a great journey. When we started doing Harmaline proper, I was tenuous due to my recent breakup w/The Secret Life. Shit just felt unfinished.
However, working hard and focused with Jeremy & Ryan has resulted in what I consider to be some of the finest music I’ve ever been part of. I firmly believe that the individual skills & musical talents of each member of Harmaline has greatly increased since we started professionally working together.
Much has transpired, and I feel like we’re a family. Almost everything each individual member creates is sent to the others for consideration. Having folks like Omar Torres and Matt Jeanes on board, if even peripherally, is entirely rewarding.
I really like working with adults. I find myself a control freak sometimes - not so much that I have to be incontrol, but I find it difficult to delegate. Thankfully, Jeremy’s got a history of working in professional music, which helps both Ryan & I out a lot. I can count on my bandmates.
It’s now time to hit the ground running. As I listen to past jams in my basement, I hear so much sonic potential. Now it’s time to channel it, focus it, and show the world what sorts of esoteric awesomeness can come from drunk, southern assholes.

For personal reference, the laborday jam LabRat is taken from is:

2) Tabla Jam (rework)
3) Duke’s Puppy (mostly Matt, Jeremy/rYan follow)
4) LabRatB (mostly Jeremy, Matt/rYan follow)
5) Strangeforms (starting @ labrat, matt/jeremy slowly bring in their versions - Ryan closes out set with pure early version)
we get signal??
The fires are lit now. It sounds like we’re going to proceed with the EP, entitled “Strangeforms”. I feel like we’re close to nailing down a tracklist too - only need to make a couple of decisions… Strangeforms itself is of fairly considerable length, so 4 total tracks may do it. Planning on working on editing Tabla Jam tonight, see what happens.
Day one offered only a little bit of warmup jamming, along with the important post-roadtrip chillout.
Day two is beginning with Matt playing me a live set using sounds from The First that I had submitted - he and Omar took elements and made a nice spooky ambience out of it - great for a segue, perhaps. It’s becoming really obvious that we have a LOT of material to go through - a lot of it strong or with great potential.
Working titles
Labrat B (from our Laborday session)
Strangeforms (Drones by Ryan and Matt) (DONE)
Duke’s Puppy segue into Matt+Omar
The First
Glory to God - Matt to finish
Delay Drum Fun - Matt to finish
Recite - Ryan
The fucking Fury - in two parts, Ryan to finish one half, Jeremy the other
fruited planar
frances e dec
tabla jam live - just needs edit
scary noises - matt segue piece
Should we proceed with an EP, or go ahead with a full album’s worth? We have the material for a full-length, but we also have numerous versions of a couple of the tracks (Delay Drum Funn and The First come to mind) - I’m leaning towards going ahead and setting a short turnaround date for an EP and using alternate versions of those tracks on the album release. Our arbitrary cutoff date for work on these tracks is May 1.
Of course, none of this counts the new stuff I just got from Matt and Ryan. There’s so much good stuff! Also, doesn’t take into account the fact that there are a lot of gems in the Labor Day sessions that could be edited out. Hmmm….
We finish by telling ghost stories. Will need to get the recording from Matt.
Now, it’s 1:22 Sunday afternoon - everyone else is asleep, but I need to get going… But I definitely leave with a full load of stuff to work on. Within the next 24 hours I’ll refine some of these ideas, and explore further some of the possibilites.
